Public event

After a long absence, our Pluralogues are back! Pre-pandemic, this session on ‘Improv’ proved to be our most popular event.

Previous participants have said it had been a long time since they’d laughed so much, and the experience had freed them up to respond more imaginatively with their clients – “A rare and wonderful experience.”

With: Darren Cheek

Date: Sunday 14 May 2023

Time: 2.30pm–5pm

Venue:  Psychosynthesis Trust, 92–94 Tooley Street, London SE1 2TH

About the topic

‘Improv’ is performing without preparation. It means responding not just to what’s happening in the immediate environment, but also to our feelings. We’re all improvisers – we have to improvise every day.

Yet all too often we don’t improvise. We remain stuck, missing our own and each other’s cues, cries, gestures, gifts, laughter, demands, gratitudes and holding. We stay in denial, avoid grief and loss, miss out on joy.

This workshop is a practical and experiential session of exercises and games in a safe, supportive, fun and creative environment. The exercises help us to free ourselves up. To help us get out of our own sensible, self-editing minds.

Although on the one hand, these exercises may seem silly and disconnected from the serious work of psychotherapy, the underlying wish of these games is to free ourselves up so that we may bring more playfulness, spontaneity, creativity and compassion into working with new and varied choices in the therapy room.

No prior experience of Improv is necessary for this gentle, fun and relaxed session. The session is an invitation to simply step in and enter as much or as little as you like, at your own level and experience, and in a way that you are comfortable. Just bring your curiosity, and ensure you invite your inner child along too!
